Linkage and Crossing Over: Genes That Travel Together

Explain why linked genes break Mendel's third law, tell complete from incomplete linkage and coupling from repulsion, place crossing over at pachytene, and turn test-cross counts into recombination frequency and map units.

In the paper

Unit 5 carries 6 of the 40 botany marks; with five chapters sharing them, this one averages just over one (MEC publishes weights by unit, not by chapter). The MEC scope line: Concept and types of linkage; Complete and incomplete linkage; Concept and significance of crossing over. Three ways it is asked:

Recall: who first saw linkage and in what plant; the substage of crossing over; what one map unit means.
Understanding: why male Drosophila show complete linkage; why closer genes recombine less; why a single crossover gives only half recombinant chromatids.
Application: test-cross counts turned into a recombination frequency; the phase of a parent read from its commonest offspring; the distance between two genes on either side of a third.
